About ScoreTuner

ScoreTuner explains how credit scores and credit reports work, in plain English with the sources attached, and gives you free tools to plan your own next move.

Why we built it

The credit system is confusing, and not by accident. You have three credit reports, dozens of score versions, and rules spread across federal statutes, regulator guidance, scoring company fine print and lender handbooks. Most people only learn how it works after something has already gone wrong.

That confusion has turned into an industry. Companies charge monthly fees to pull your reports, mail dispute letters, place freezes and write goodwill letters. You're allowed to do every one of those things yourself, almost always for free, and federal law gives you the right to do the most important ones. People pay because nobody showed them how the machinery works.

ScoreTuner shows the machinery: what a lender sees, which date sets the balance your card reports, how long each item can stay on a report, and what the law lets you ask for. Then it does the arithmetic for you, in tools you run yourself.

What we do, and what we won't

What ScoreTuner does

What ScoreTuner doesn't do

  • We're not a credit repair company, and we never charge for disputes.
  • We never contact credit bureaus, creditors or collectors for anyone.
  • We don't make loans, sell leads, or decide who gets approved.
  • We don't predict point changes. FICO and VantageScore don't publish point tables, so nobody can honestly promise a number.
  • We don't ask for your Social Security number or your bank logins.
  • We don't sell personal data.

How the tools keep your numbers private

The free tools run entirely in your browser. When you type a balance, a limit or a score, the arithmetic happens on your device and nothing is sent to us. Some tools remember your last entries in your browser's local storage so they're still there when you come back. That copy stays on your device, and clearing your browser's data for scoretuner.com removes it.

If you create a free account and choose to save something, we store what you saved with your email address so you can open it from any device. That's the only time tool data reaches our servers, and you can delete it, or your whole account, whenever you like. The privacy policy covers the details.

How we keep ourselves honest

Every guide follows our editorial standards: statutes and regulators first, a short answer at the top, sources listed at the bottom, and an updated date on every page. Plus subscriptions pay for the site, and how we make money explains that, along with the things that never influence what a guide says.

When we get something wrong, we fix it and log the correction where anyone can see it.

How to reach us

Email help@scoretuner.com. We can't see or change your credit reports, but we can fix a page, answer a question about a tool, or help with your account. The contact page lists what to include so we can help on the first reply.
