Credit glossary

Buy now, pay later (BNPL)

Definition

Short-term installment financing offered at checkout, often split into four payments, whose credit reporting depends on the lender and product.

Reporting is uneven. Affirm began reporting all its loans, including Pay in 4, to Experian in April 2025 and to TransUnion in May 2025, while many pay-in-four loans from other providers still aren't reported at all. FICO announced separate BNPL score versions in June 2025, but the scores most lenders use weren't designed around this data. A missed payment can still lead to fees, collections and negative reporting.

Treat BNPL like any other debt when you plan. Several small plans can overlap, and the payments come out whether or not you remembered them. The CFPB's January 2025 report examined how BNPL fits alongside consumers' other unsecured debt. Before a loan application, list every open plan, because a lender may ask about them or see the ones that report.
