Account status codes

Metro 2 account status code 93: collection

What code 93 means

The account has been assigned to collections, either the lender's internal collection department or an outside agency. Collection agencies reporting debts they handle or bought also use this status on their own tradelines. It stays in place while the debt is unpaid; once it's paid, the status should change to a paid status such as 62.

How it shows on your report

"Collection account," "Placed for collection" or similar, often with an original creditor named.

How it affects your score

A major negative. Unpaid collections hurt in every common scoring model; how paid ones count depends on the model.

What to check

The date of first delinquency should match when you first fell behind with the original creditor, not when the collector got the debt. If the original lender sold the debt and still shows a balance, it's double counted. Paid medical collections, and medical collections under $500, shouldn't appear at the three bureaus.
